Location
Situated 30 miles off the north coast of Honduras in the western Caribbean sea, Roatan is the largest of four islands in the Bay Islands chain.
Fingernail-shaped and tilted, the island is approximately 40 miles long and up to 4 miles wide.
It has an international airport, direct flights from around the world, and is a favorite stopping place for many cruise ships.Recently Roatan has been discovered by European and Asian tourists as well.
Storms come from the north and Roatan is protected from most major hurricanes, Mitch being the exception in 1998. Rainy season is October to December, boasting pleasant 80-90 degree weather almost year round.
Oak forests and high mountains fill the east end, while the west end is more tropical. The island is ringed by a series of ‘bights’ (small bays) which provide protection from storms as well as secure moorage.
The small village of West End has become an incredible hot-spot for tourists, ex-pats and international visitors. It is full of dive shops, restaurants, internet cafes and more.
History
Mayan ceremonial sites are still being uncovered around the island. More recently, the fresh water and oak forests were scenes for many battles between Spanish and British privateers for 300 years. Sunken wrecks can still be found among the reefs.
The Bay Islands were turned over to Honduras by the British in 1956 and have enjoyed a stable democracy since then. Roatan is slated to become an international free port by the end of 2006.
The current owner has lived on Roatan off and on for 10 years. The previous owner of 40 years never used the land.
